Ce livre témoigne d’une résidence d’artistes et d’une exposition, organisées par Marion Laval-Jeantet et Benoît Mangin, qui ont eu lieu à Cotonou, au Bénin, d’août à septembre 1997.

« Veilleurs du monde » (« Gbêdji Kpontolè » en fon, langue africaine la plus parlée au Bénin) est le nom de ce projet qui visait à susciter des réalisations d’œuvres en commun autour de thèmes liés à l’urgence écologique. La résidence s’est déroulée du 12 août au 9 septembre dans la maison d’Africréation, structure franco-béninoise d’accueil d’artistes ; l’exposition a été présentée du 8 au 25 septembre au Centre Culturel Français. Anaïd Demir, critique d’art invitée à suivre le déroulement de la résidence, a fourni le matériau principal du livre : son journal de bord et ses interviews des différents protagonistes.

This book evoks an artists’ residency and an exhibition, curated by Marion Lavai­l-Jeantet and Benoit Mangin, which took place in Cotonou, Benin from August to September, 1997.

The project’s name was “Worldwatchers” (“Gbêdji Kpontolè “ in Fon, the main Beninese language) and its aim was to make possible the realization of collaborative works whose themes centered around ecological emergency. The residency took place from August 12 to September 9 at the Africreation house, a Franco-Beninese facility set up to receive artists; the exhibition was presented from September 8 through 25 at  the French Cultural Center. Art critic Anaïd Demir, invited to follow the development of the residency, provided the principal material for the book: her travel log-journal and her interviews of the different protagonists.
